What are the goals?
-
To provide personal perspectives and insight of the D/HH adults journey
-
To increase awareness and sensitivity to issues faced by individuals who are D/HH
-
To share from the perspective of D/HH individuals
-
To create a safe place where children, parents and professionals can ask questions about the D/HH journey
-
To provide trained, relevant and appropriate input from D/HH Guides to families seeking a better understanding of deafness and hearing loss
-
To provide a mechanism for the skills, abilities and experiences of adults who are D/HH to influence the development of more effective programs and services
DHH Guide program is based on the Hands & Voices mission and vision of providing support without communication bias through parent/peer networking to families with children who are deaf or hard of hearing.
Who should apply?
Deaf or Hard of Hearing adults using ASL, Cued Speech, Total Communication or Oral who are interested in working with families, who can:
-
provide their own transportation and be willing to travel
-
attend mandatory initial training and required on-going trainings
-
be members of and maintain good standing within the Hands & Voices organization
-
treat all families with kindness and respect regardless of the family’s choices even if they differ from their own
For D/HH Guides to provide support to families with children who are deaf or hard of hearing, D/HH Guides will undergo necessary specialized training, including:
